How It’s Going…

So I have a few items I am currently working on. I’ll figure out a better way to track these eventually but here is the baseline, the starting point, the numero uno post… or well technically the second one but you catch my drift.

Game Development:

I currently have a game idea that I started designing earlier this year and started developing a couple of months ago but with not a lot of progress yet. I’m sure I will get into details at some point, but for today, know that it is a rogue-like racing game. Imagine combining Balatro, Hot Wheels cars and D&D dice and you’ll be close. We are going to call it Dice Racer for now, but that’s simply because I don’t have a better name for it yet.

As of today, I have 4 Scenes setup in Unity: Splash, Main Menu, Race, and Shop. The Splash scene only currently has some AI art and a button to enter the game. The Main Menu has options for a few things but the only one that works so far is “Play / Continue”. Clicking that brings up an options screen for starting a new game of reloading one already in progress. The save / load functionality is built as well. Clicking Let’s Race, or reloading a saved game, takes you to the Race scene where I have built a drawer to roll dice as well as a dice bag to hold them. The 3d race track is loaded and some placeholder free cars are placed into their starting positions. And that’s about it so far… I started building the first track but have not gotten very far at all.

Here are some stats to track against:

Lines of C# Code: 1280

Classes: 32

Writing:

I had a idea in 2023 for a story I wanted to tell. I wasn’t sure whether it should be a game or book or what exactly, but I started outlining it and came up with about 20 chapters. Last week I decided to start writing it. It a story set in a fictional South Carolina coastal town about a woman and her children who move there because she needs a new start after losing both her husband and her job in about 2 1/2 years. After she gets to Moss Island, there is some fishy stuff going on that the family gets wrapped up in.

Podcast:

My good friend Brian and I started a podcast called “F’ing Up the Ineffable” and published out first episode in June of this year. We talk about a lot of various topics with the intention of encouraging people to think and not just take for granted what they are told. We also laugh a lot and have a good time. We will be recording our 9th episode this weekend and have every intention of making it bigger and more involved as time rolls on.

Stats to Date:

Episodes Recorded: 8

Episodes Published: 6

Total Listens All Time (Podcast network/YouTube Long Form/ YouTube Shorts/Total): 133 / 73 / 631 / 837

Music (Mistakes Were Made):

I started playing in a cover band with a few friends this past Spring and we have a goal to play live “eventually”. We don’t practice as often as I would like and when we do, it doesn’t always go as smoothly as I would like, but I get so much out of playing music with those people that it almost doesn’t matter. We tentatively named the band “Mistakes Were Made” and I think that name describes us well. Our next practice won’t be until 10/26 but to date here’s what I have guitar-wise:

Songs fully learned: 8

Songs I still need to learn some parts (like solos that I am not very good at): 2

And finally…

Weight loss / fitness:

I have struggled with being overweight my entire life and although I am NOT at my highest ever, I am much heavier than I want to be so I am wanting to work on that. I have also been working out with Brian, lifting weights for the last year on a Mad Cow program. I am not going to be able to work out the next two weekends so we are planning to reset and hit it hard again when we start back. Here’s my recent PRs and weight:

Weight 290.2 lbs

PRs (all are one set of five in lbs):

Squat: 200 (I have squatted a 5×5 of 235 in the past but that was 10 or so years ago)

Bench Press: 200

Bent Rows: 220

Deadlift: 225

Seated Overhead Press: 155

My plan is to give an update weekly of each of these categories with the hop that I have made at least a little progress in each or a lot of progress in one or two. Stay tuned!
